Montreux
Montreux, located on beautiful Lake Geneva, is nestled between the blossoming vineyards of Lavaux and the mighty Swiss Alps.
The city’s setting is reason enough to visit, but travelers also come to watch the Montreux Sports football club, shop at chic Forum stores or stroll along the Magnolia-lined lakeside promenade. The lakeside walk extends north to the charming town of Vevey and south to the famous Chillon Castle.
With 20 restaurants in the Michelin Guide and Gault Millau, Montreux is a renowned destination for culinary arts. Try the Montreux Jazz Café, a softly lit place with souvenirs from the past fifty years and a menu featuring the favorite dishes of Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Afterward, venture to the Grand Hôtel Suisse-Majestic and enjoy the beautiful view from the top, which overlooks Lake Geneva.
Finish the night by trying your luck at the legendary Casino Barrière of Montreux. The casino has slots, table games and two restaurants.
The 51st annual Montreux Jazz Festival occurs from June 30 - July 15. No longer focusing exclusively on jazz, the festival showcases musical styles from around the world. This year’s lineup includes diverse artists such as John Newman, Lauryn Hill, The Lumineers, Usher & The Roots, and Herbie Hancock.
With so many entertainment possibilities, visitors often stay several nights. Accommodations range from the luxurious Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, built in 1906, to cozy bed-and-breakfast spots. More adventurous travelers might want to camp along Lake Geneva or occupy a romantic Mongolian yurt, perched 2,042-meters high on the summit of Rochers de Naye.
Summer is a great time to rent an Enterprise car for a fun-filled getaway. One of the world’s premiere live music festivals, along with great restaurants and shopping, is only a 2-hour drive from Basel and 2 ½-hour drive from Zurich.
